Camping with children and infants can be great fun, and quite a learning experience as they are introduced to all sorts of nature. There are some special things to keep in mind, however when introducing the little ones to camping in a tent.
Pre-CampingThe claustrophobic nature of tent camping may be a new, yet scary experience for kids. A really great way to practice is to pitch the tent in your backyard and let them get used to the ten prior to the camping trip. When you make the trip, if you brought a long a separate camping tent for the kids, that’s fine. But also be open to letting the little ones in your tent to cuddle
Camp Close to Home the First TimeIf the kids made it through the practice camping in the backyard, you still may want to make the first overnight camping trip somewhat close to home. This way, you can cut the trip short or perhaps have a relative pick up the child for a weekend at gramma’s.
Campsite Set-UpIf you have a separate tent for the kids, set theirs up facing yours so you can keep an eye on them throughout the evening. Let them bring their favorite pillow or blanket from home in addition to their sleeping bag, and perhaps those stuffed animals too. Stock their tent with lanterns and flashlights so they will never be totally in the dark should they need to get somewhere or find something.
Another idea is to have the family, if room, sleep in one tent and set up a smaller dome tent for a play tent. Keep all the toys in one place. This way, in the case of rain, play can still go on without interrupting someone’s afternoon nap!
Be sure to bring foods the kids will enjoy, like hot dogs. Introduce them to S’mores. But, never leave them alone with the campfire!
Campground ChoiceYou may want to choose a campground that has a playground, lake or pool or other kid-friendly activities. Also, bring along games and books to help keep kids occupied at the campsite.
Camping with InfantsPack-n-plays are said to be great for little ones to sleep in inside a tent. There is also portable infant bed called the Pea Pod that can be used for infant tent camping. Sleeping alongside mom or dad on an air mattress is fine too. Believe it or not, many outdoor gear companies have a line of infant camping gear—including a baby bell mosquito net. There are also camping potties for toddlers.
